Okay, that's two words.
This phrase has been popping up a lot lately, or so it seems. I don't think I heard it used much before the summer of 2014 when there were rumors about a feud between two celebrities. Now I can't help but see and hear it everywhere.
I haven't consulted a dictionary (i.e. Urban Dictionary) yet, but my understanding is that the meaning of "throwing shade" is to insult or antagonize someone in a somewhat subtle way. Possibly passive-aggressively?
The phrase works really well and is easy to understand in my opinion -- still can't say I'm a big fan of it. I really prefer four letter words. They don't make it on to the television or more family oriented publications online though.
