(Spoilers) Hell on Wheels: S3E3 "Range War" Impressions

***SPOILER WARNING: Spoilers may be found in the post below about VARIOUS ITEMS. And I'm going to add in a bit of filler text here to limit how much of the main article gets shown in a preview. That should take care of most of it. Hopefully. And away we go. SPOILER WARNING. ***

Back to Hell on Wheels, as in the town, but we also get to see some Omaha. "Indians" are back and so are U.S. Cavalry. Overall, an interesting episode -- I like everything.

Overview
The episode begins with an alleged "Indian" attack with the only survivor who got scalped reporting the tale. Turns out that the "Indians" were actually Americans posing as Native Americans. They were allegedly hired by Durant to disrupt building of the railroad by the Union Pacific company led by Cullen. Halfway into the episode and the raiding party is killed by Cullen and Elam.

Cullen goes to Omaha where the raiding crew were supposed to collect their payment. There, he finds Durant, whom he already suspected of hiring the crew. Durant denies everything and Cullen returns to Hell on Wheels. Unfortunately, the cavalrymen already killed a group of Native Americans in reprisal for the initial attack. Near the end of the episode, a group of dead and scalped surveyors, killed by real Native Americans, is brought back to camp.

Highlights
Highlight of the episode goes to the scene in Omaha when Cullen brings back one member of the raiding party to meet Durant. This person is dead and Cullen puts him in a chair at a table across from Durant in a high-class restaurant full of guests.

Another interesting scene is where Cullen has a "picnic" with Ruth in her makeshift church. Yes, there was a gun fight, but I think they overdid the slow motion death cam shots.

Impressions
Major spoiler: the Swede is alive. And wow, does he look different with long hair and a beard. Looks like he's the manservant or helper of a family and using a fake story about how his family was killed in a Native American attack. Kind of glad he's still kicking considering how great of a villain he is -- performance is also great. Still annoyed that they killed Lily. Speaking of, what I think is her replacement, Louise Ellison (Jennifer Ferrin) is still around.

Dead body in the bar is absolute genius. Wonder what Bohannon's kill count is since the beginning of the show. Has to be in the dozens by now. Good episode.

  1. I personally think this was a very strong episode for its examination of racist justifications for the expansion of the US nation-state. I teach a college level course on the Westerns genre and write about Westerns at www.westernsreboot.com - for those interested, I posted a review of this well-done episode at:
